Local.com Buys Local Search Company Krillion For $3.5M, Debuts Daily Deal Service

Online local media and search company Local.com has acquired location-based shopping data aggegator Krillion for $3.5 million in cash. The company provides local shopping information on over 70,000 consumer products from over 50,000 retailers, including in-store availability, comparison pricing, current discounts and images. With a separate news announcement, NASDAQ-listed Local.com has launched yet another daily deal site, dubbed Spreebird.

BlackBerry Bold 9900 hands-on (update: video)

So we finally got our dirty little hands on RIM's new BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphone here at BlackBerry World 2011. It's basically the old Bold but with a capacitive touchscreen and updated innards including a 1.2 GHz CPU, 768 MB of RAM, a GPU , HSPA+, and NFC support. From a design perspective it mixes BlackBerry's traditional formula with iPhone 4-like materials (that familiar stainless steel rim). It certainly looks premium and feels lovely in the hand, and the keyboard is typical BlackBerry -- which is to say fantastic. The screen is beautiful too, perfect to showcase that new BlackBerry 7 OS. Still, we can't help but think that we're looking at the device RIM should have shipped last summer instead of the Torch. We'll have a hands on video up soon but for now take a peek at our gallery below.

Uber To Expand Private Car Service To Chicago, Seattle, Boston And D.C.

It looks like Uber is on the move again. According to a Tweet from the private car service, the company is planning to expand to Boston, Chicago, Seattle, and D.C. Uber just advertised a number of job postings for general managers in these cities. As we reported a few months ago, Uber recently started testing the service, which allows you order a private car from an iPhone app at discounted rates; in New York, after being available in San Francisco and Palo Alto. Uber, which just raised $11 million in funding, allows you to order a black car to come to your location on the mobile app, and then watch it come to you as the app tracks the car via GPS. Payments are handled automatically by charging the card you have on file, and it costs at least 50% more than a taxi.

Zune HD: Sept. 2009 - March 2011?

It seems as if Microsoft finally whacked its underperforming Zune hardware with extreme prejudice.

That report comes courtesy of Bloomberg, and I've reached out to Microsoft for some confirmation. If true, the news should come as a surprise to exactly nobody, considering how the player failed to make a dent in the Apple iPod's reigning market share.

Bloomberg's report suggests that Microsoft will continue to bake its Zune software into Windows Phone 7. This is essential, because the Zune-branded storefront is Microsoft's hub for music and media purchases. Microsoft apparently plans to keep manufacturing the existing Zune HD, without releasing new-and-improved versions.

The improvement in smartphones' capabilities (and battery life) has seen a corresponding decline in the need for separate, portable media players. Even Apple has seen sales of its traditional iPod fall over the past several quarters, a phenomenon the company attributes to the rise of the iPhone and iPod Touch. That trend is less to blame for the Zune HD's death, however, than an anemic marketing campaign by Microsoft, coupled by a failure to persuade consumers that their device represented a value-add over the iPod.

The Zune HD attracted some strong reviews in the wake of its September 2009 release. Personally, I thought it a solid piece of hardware with a nifty software interface, and something that probably should have gained more market share than it did. If it's truly dead, then R.I.P.

Triton 36,000 submarine to plumb ocean's deepest depths, comes in yellow (video)

Richard Branson's not the only one eager to explore that other 70 percent of the world. Triton Submarines has designed a three-passenger sub able to dive 36,000 feet, reaching the deepest part of the world's oceans. And while Sir Richard envisions a spaceship-like craft, Triton's design evokes old school bathyspheres: it's a glass globe. Of course, water pressure poses a serious engineering challenge when you descend seven miles below the surface -- the last manned sub to reach that depth had only a single, small window made of plexiglass. The current design uses borosilicate glass (like those transparent displays we, um, saw through a while back) that actually grows stronger as depth pressure increases; it took eight months of careful heating and cooling to produce. Assuming the glass holds, it will take about 75 minutes to reach the bottom of the ocean. Anyone considering a test run should check out the PR video after the break, showing Triton's other submarines in action.

Genetically Modified Virus Improves Solar Cell Efficiency With Carbon Nanotubes

Solar cells are about to get cheaper! Using a genetically modified virus called M13, researchers from MIT were able to make carbon nanotubes self-assemble allowing the solar cells to collect electrons at a more efficient rate. Scientists already know that single-walled carbon nanotubes have a high electron mobility, meaning that electrons can move through them very fast. Using this knowledge, researchers could in theory improve the efficiency of photovoltaic devices (like solar panels) using these nanotubes.

But there is one problem--carbon nanotubes, when they are formed, usually come in a mix of two types: Some of them act like semiconductors and some of them act like metals. If you know your chemistry, then you know that conductivity increases in metals when the temperature decreases, while conductivity actually increases in semiconductors as temperature increases (to a certain point, anyway). Because of this, the two types of nanotubes basically cancel each other out, making them less effective as a means of increasing solar cell efficiency.

The MIT researchers came up with a way to separate the two types so that they might be applied to a solar cell more effectively. The researchers used the M13 virus to rearange the carbon nanotubes on a surface. The virus also kept the tubes separated so they don't cause circuits to, well, short-circuit.

You read that correctly. A virus rearranged the nanotubes. According to MIT, using this new process increased the solar cells' efficiency by almost one third. Impressive! Check out Nature and MIT for the full details.
