Millionaire Segway importer killed after rolling off cliff riding his own device

Filed under: Etc., Safety, Technology, UKAccording to the BBC, Jimi Heselden, the CEO of Hesco Bastion, was killed on Sunday, September 26 when he apparently rode his Segway off of a cliff and into a river. Hesco Bastion sells Segway self-balancing scooters in the UK market.

According to the story, police were called after reports came in that a man had fallen into a wharf in West Yorkshire. Heselden and a "Segway-type device" were found in the water, and the scooter mogul was pronounced dead at the scene. Heselden made his fortune in the manufacturing sector and founded his corporation in the tough neighborhood where he grew up.

Heselden was also a generous philanthropist, donating a total of 23 million to various charities during his life. Earlier this month, the 62-year-old businessman donated 10 million to a Leeds community organization. The BBC quoted a spokesperson for Hesco Bastion as saying Heselden will be remembered both for his generosity and his pride in the Leeds area. Thanks to everyone for the tips.

TaintDroid -- realtime privacy monitoring for your Android phone

Everyone should take their personal data seriously, and the people behind TaintDroid are about to help us all with that.  It's a joint project between Intel, Penn State University, and Duke University that monitors the private data that third party applications request from your Android phone, using a scientific technique called "dynamic taint analysis".  In a nutshell, TaintDroid will monitor applications and alert you when one tries to send personal identifiable data from your device.  It won't tell you that this is good or bad, just what is being sent and where it's being sent to.  You can then use the information and make that determination for yourself -- it's all nice and neutral in a very clinical way. While Android does tell you what sort of permissions an application will have access to, many users ignore those warnings or simply don't understand them.  That's where a service like TaintDroid could be very, very handy.  They have a very nice FAQ and video demo of TaintDroid in action at their project page, which you can find at the source link.  Thank goodness Android is a platform open to this sort of application, rather than not approving it to protect developers, then preventing most to install it since it's not "endorsed" by someone in California.  Be sure to check it out, and as soon as it's made available for the average Joe (hey that's us!) we'll let you know.  [AppAnalysis]Posted originally at Android CentralSponsored by Android Cases and Accessories

Razer Tron Mouse leaves light trails in our hearts (video)

We don't really expect that the actual Tron movie will be any good, but boy, its officially endorsed accessories aren't looking half bad. The $100 laser mouse from Razer has snuck out for a quick pre-release video demo where we get to see it tracking gloriously on an accompanying "precision" mousepad. There's hardly much to be learnt about the mouse's ergonomics or 5600dpi accuracy, but it does glow with that mighty inviting shade of blue (cyan?) and the mousepad reacts to the laser's illumination by leaving dreamy light trails after your movements. It's cyber-poetry in motion, available after the break.Continue reading Razer Tron Mouse leaves light trails in our hearts (video)Razer Tron Mouse leaves light trails in our hearts (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 23:20:00 EDT. 2011 Coda electric sedan priced at $44,900 - over $12k more than Nissan Leaf

Coda Sedan - Click above for high-res image gallery

What plug-in car will cost more than a Nissan Leaf or a Chevrolet Volt but is virtually unknown to the American public? The Coda EV Sedan, that's what. Coda Automotive has announced that the price for its all-electric vehicle will be $44,900 - or, $37,400 after the feds chip in $7,500 as a tax credit. To compare, the Leaf costs $25,280 after incentives and the Volt can be had for $33,500 with federal help. So, your options will be to either buy a Volt and get an electric vehicle with a range extender or spend $4,000 more to go gas-free and have a longer EV-only range. Or, spend a lot less on the Leaf ($12,120) and go almost as far on battery power. The Leaf is expected to get around 100 miles to the charge, while Coda is saying that its 33.8 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery system with active thermal management will provide "a dependable all-weather range of up to 120 miles and at least 30 percent more usable energy than our leading competitor." Here's some of the not-as-good fine print:

After tax savings, net as low as $37,400. MSRP $44,900, with federal tax savings from 0-$7,500. Excludes tax, title and license. Initially available through online reservation process. Deliveries will commence in December 2010. Subject to change. Limited quantities available in California only. Increased availability in Spring 2011 with full market rollout through 2012. Taxpayer must incur federal tax liability to receive full benefits. Consult your tax professional.
Even reserving the car costs more than it does for the Leaf. Coda is asking for a $499 refundable deposit that can be placed here. The Coda will be available in California later this year and Hawaii in 2011.

First Super Hi-Vision broadcast from UK to Japan is one for the geeklopedia

Super Hi-Vision is still very experimental, but the BBC and NHK's first UK-to-Tokyo SHV broadcast trial of a live musical set by the The Charlatans hints it is inching closer to commercial viability. A NHK-developed camera -- one of three in existence -- made it all possible, and featured a specialized lens and optical data transmitter to handle the retina-confounding 7680 x 4320 pixel signal. This SHV trial was also the first to use a blazingly fast 24Gb/s internet connection to broadcast in lieu of more expensive satellite transmissions used in previous tests. As if the brouhaha wasn't bleeding-edge enough, a lucky few at the BBC could even view the show on a prototype 103-inch plasma television developed by NHK to see a mere quarter of the signal's massive resolution. Sure, this may not be the kind of event kids will learn about in class someday, but it certainly makes us feel like giddy little school boys. To learn more, watch a behind the scenes BBC video on the event embedded after the break.Continue reading First Super Hi-Vision broadcast from UK to Japan is one for the geeklopediaFirst Super Hi-Vision broadcast from UK to Japan is one for the geeklopedia originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 30 Sep 2010 09:01:00 EDT. Scosche MotorMouth II brings handsfree calling to any aux input-equipped vehicle

Nah, it's not the second coming of the Jupiter Jack. In fact, it's not a lackluster FM transmitter at all. Instead of pumping yet another one of those, Scosche has decided to take the high road here with the MotorMouth II, a Bluetooth streaming device that's designed for use in any vehicle with a 3.5mm auxiliary input. The idea here is to pair your Bluetooth handset with the adapter, then plug the adapter into your head unit; once you start a handsfree conversation on your mobile, the caller's voice can be heard loud and clear over your car's stereo. Of course, you may want to avoid this critter if you're planning on taking to your part-time lover while your full-time partner in life is riding shotgun, but for the faithful ones out there, it's available now for $79.99.Continue reading Scosche MotorMouth II brings handsfree calling to any aux input-equipped vehicleScosche MotorMouth II brings handsfree calling to any aux input-equipped vehicle originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 08:51:00 EDT. Epic 4G hidden menus and more? [From the forums]

We all know we love Android so much because the development community rocks, and people are always finding new ways to make it even better. Our forums members are always finding great new tricks and fun things to do with their devices, and egg_head has discovered that Samsung devices seem to have quite a string of hidden menus. Now, these menus are apparently found on all Samsung devices, just not in the same location, but they can sure do some nifty things. Ranging from a full device shut down by holding the end key button to various different audio settings these additional menus can allow even more customization then we had even imagined. For more information be sure to jump in the forums and read up on the various menus! [Android Central Forums]Posted originally at Android CentralSponsored by Android Cases and Accessories

Chromium OS infiltrates iPad, makes itself comfortable

What is this madness we see before us? Hexxeh, he who provides your nightly Chromium builds, has dropped a small but perfectly formed bombshell by revealing that he's managed to install Google's nascent OS onto Apple's hotcake of a tablet, the iPad. He's evidenced this feat by tweeting from the liberated slate, though one of his outgoing missives includes the dire warning that he'll "dash your hopes later, there are a few catches." Well, at least that gives us a little time to fantasize about Appoogle synergies before those dream-destroying details are revealed in full.

Curiously, only the Droid fonts show up in the Google Font Directory, but whether that's for licensing reasons or not I don't know. Perhaps it just hasn't been updated yet.

Anyway, choice is great and all -- they're working on adding more fonts and support for other character sets! -- but the most important thing is that imported Microsoft Word docs written in Calibri will now import properly into Google Docs. Apple Remote app 2.0 adds support for new Apple TV, iPad

No surprises here, but Apple's just released version 2.0 of the Remote app for iPhone and iPad, which adds in support for the new iOS-based Apple TV in addition to iTunes on OS X. The interface is mostly the same -- a trackpad-like screen for ATV remote control and an iPod-like interface for more direct media playback -- but it's now optimized for the Retina display on the iPhone 4 and the larger screen size of the iPad. Since the new Apple TV is streaming-only, Remote also now has better support for controlling shared music libraries, making remote control of iTunes on your HTPC slightly easier as well. It's supposedly already headed into production, but it looks like the iControlPad is still undergoing a few last minute changes. The group behind the iPhone game controller peripheral has just announced that the device will actually use Bluetooth instead of an Apple dock connector -- a change that's apparently being done in part due to Apple's recent litigation with Hypermac, and to avoid any actual licensing issues. As you might expect from such a small project, that's also put the team in something of a bind, and they're now looking for help from folks experienced with using Bluetooth in iOS. Of course, while the device is being pitched as an iPhone peripheral to start, there's also been support for other phones promised, and it's now been officially confirmed that those other phones will include Android phones with Bluetooth.iControlPad to use Bluetooth instead of dock connector originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 28 Sep 2010 15:51:00 EDT. Look at you, you platform agnostic, making room for three current gaming consoles in your entertainment center, looking down with a rueful smile upon those who would waste time arguing about superiority. All three receive your equal love, and so shouldn't all three get equal share of your ears? They could if you had the F540 Wireless Gaming Headset from Logitech, a new entrant that, at $150, costs about the same as the G930 we recently enjoyed, but does so with mere stereo instead of 7.1 surround. Here you're paying for the inputs instead of the outputs, with a base containing 3.5mm and RCA plugs enough for three separate sources, plus the necessary outputs to pump voice chat to an Xbox 360 and a PS3. The headset itself has volume and mute controls built-in and charges over USB, offering up to 10 hours of disturbance-free playtime. You can pre-order yours now ahead of an October shipment domestically, or November for European followers of Thomas Huxley.

Acer unveils AMD-infused Aspire Z3100 AIO, Revo 3700 nettop now available for $349

Can you smell it in the air? Autumn is most assuredly here. Sure, you can deduce as much from equinoxes or changing leaves, but if you ask us, it's almost just as precise to go by a new, pre-holiday product cycle. Acer's taken the cue with two new desktop SKUs -- one each in the nettop and all-in-one categories. First with the latter: the 21.5-inch AZ3100 all-in-one (pictured). A tier lower than the AZ5700, this one lacks the multitouch and TV tuner, and instead utilizes a 2GHz AMD Athlon II 170u processor, NVIDIA GeForce 9200 graphics, 3GB RAM, and 500GB HDD. Add in a DVD drive, webcam, HDMI, six USB 2.0 ports, Windows 7 Home Premium, and a side chassis for "cable management." It does best its older brother in the price category, though, at just $599 -- about five Benjamins lower.

As for the Aspire Revo 3700, it was actually announced earlier this month, but now we've got the skinny on this book-sized nettop's price and availability. That'd be $349 for the tag, and a street date of approximately... now, according to the press release. Speaking of which, all pertinent paperwork can be found after the break. Survey: 9 out of 10 say phoning while driving should be illegal - half do it themselves

We all know that driving while talking on the cell phone is a distraction. Even if you say you're a good driver with superior multi-tasking skills, blabbing on a phone while piloting a two-ton automobile is a quick way to show that you are in fact not smarter than a fifth grader. Don't let Jeff Foxworthy and his band of miscreants shame you, though... nearly all of us have done it in a moment of weakness. A recent survey of 1,000 motorists found that 90 percent believe that talking on the phone while driving should be illegal. The flip side is that 51 percent of that same data set admit they have used their phone while out on the road.

The survey, sponsored by the Chubb Group of Insurance Companies, highlights an interesting paradox in our thinking - the "it won't happen to me" notion. A majority of us agree that doing something is dangerous yet we do it anyway, even when we think it should be illegal. We believe we're somehow better than the folks who get in the distracted-driving car accidents but we're exhibiting similar behavior. We eat food, send texts, read our Kindles, call mom and check e-mail while we should be paying more attention to the road. It's not just about making sure your vehicle is heading where it's supposed to go but to also maintain awareness of what's happening around you - and that's extremely difficult to do when typing out "LOL, OMG-guy nxt 2 me drvng CRZY!!11!"

Check out the official press release after the jump for more details on the survey.

Exagon Furtive e-GT - Click above to watch the video after the jump

Born of Exagon Engineering, constructor of many a race car (including the eight ice-melting machines that contested the Trophée Andros Electrique last season), Exagon Motors has uncloaked a new street machine for a handful of French journalists, and the car's performance numbers will probably raise more eyebrows than its looks.

The 2+2 is said to achieve a Tesla Roadster-beating 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds with twin Siemens motors producing 340 horsepower. The all-important, all-electric range is similar to the Silicon Valley speedster as well, with 400 kilometers (248.5 miles) claimed as the distance possible before the need for its on-board gasoline motor to kick in to take you the next 400 kms.

It appears the French manufacturer could begin production as soon as 2012. As far as the price goes, we're going to guess this is is one of those, "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" type of deals. Still, we'll ask anyway when we check it out for ourselves in the metal. Or carbon fiber. Or whatever it is. In the meantime, you can get a great look, inside and out, in the video reveal awaiting you after the break.

Twitter aware of onMouseOver hack for months, claims 17-year-old who exposed it

Filed under: Internet, Social Software, web 2.0
A 17-year-old schoolboy from Australia has taken the blame for the onMouseOver JavaScript Twitter exploit that caused havoc for a few hours on Wednesday.

Disclaiming innocence, Pearce Delphin -- who has the coolest name in the world -- says that he only discovered the vulnerability. "I did it merely to see if it could be done ... that JavaScript really could be executed within a tweet," he told AFP via email. The self-replicating worm came later, with the Guardian reporting that it was originally crafted by Masato Kinugawa and refined by Magnus Holm. Within hours, many mutations appeared -- shortly after, the Twitter offices in San Francisco groggily awoke, and the exploit was swiftly fixed.

Most importantly, however, Pearce says that Twitter knew about the problem for 'months.' It's not clear whether Pearce is talking authoritatively -- he might simply be stealing someone else's thunder -- but I'm sure Twitter will be quick to respond if he's wrong.

Update: Twitter actually fixed the bug last month, but seemingly made another change recently that brought it back.Twitter aware of onMouseOver hack for months, claims 17-year-old who exposed it originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 22 Sep 2010 10:20:00 EST. Video: Volvo suffers another auto-stop safety system failure in public fashion

Filed under: Sedan, Wagon, Safety, Technology, Videos, Volvo, Australia
Volvo V60 Pedestrian Detection test failures - Click above to watch the videos

Volvo's new Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake is under scrutiny after a series of demonstrations for journalists in Australia went awry in rather spectacular fashion. During the presentation, an inflatable test dummy was mowed down after the system failed to detect its presence in time to stop. This, despite the fact that the technology was showcased under controlled conditions. The optional hardware, which debuts on the 2011 S60 and V60 wagon, utilizes both radar and camera technology to avoid or mitigate an accident with a pedestrian by automatically slowing the vehicle to either a full stop or at least initiating full braking to lower the rate of impact (Volvo: "The system can avoid a collision at speeds up to 22 mph. At higher speeds, the focus is on reducing the car's speed as much as possible prior to the impact").

Volvo officials themselves cautioned... that the system may not always detect the dummy's presence.
According to Aussie motoring website Car Advice, journalists at the demonstration were told by a Volvo spokesperson that the system may have been 'confused' by a tractor-trailer parked around 30 meters behind the dummy, but the subsequent removal of the big rig still saw two more failures resulting in impacts. According to the same report, Volvo noted that "around 650 media participated in the week-long demonstration - with a claimed 99.7 per cent success rate - the nature of the failed 0.3 per cent of runs appears to be undisclosed."

Autoblog had the chance to sample this system firsthand at the Oregon launch of the S60 earlier this month in similar parking lot tests with different dummies. It performed as-advertised for us, though a few other journalists did record failures of their own - though those lapses were evidently at least partially exacerbated by the drivers giving-in to their instinct to tromp on the brake pedal. Interestingly, Volvo officials themselves cautioned us in advance that the system may not always detect the dummy's presence, in part because it doesn't mimic the behavior of a human (the Pedestrian Detection system is trained to look for human movements - arms swaying, legs moving, and so on). In fact, when we asked if the system would also detect and activate when animals are in the road, officials said that the safety feature has not yet been trained to do so - it is only capable of registering bipeds.

As you may recall, this is not the first failure of Volvo's new auto-stop impact avoidance systems. Back in May, we told you about another incident in which an S60's City Safety auto-brake system test resulted in the car plowing into the back of a semi truck. Volvo would apparently later state that the crash was caused by a 'low-voltage event' in the car's electrical system that turned the rear-impact avoidance system off, a flaw that has since been repaired.

Follow the jump to watch videos of the PSD failures as well as an official Volvo video explaining how the system is designed to work.

Teenage Engineering OP-1 synthesizer gets priced at $799, can't hold out on us much longer

Not since the debut of the Tenori-On have we seen so much buzz surrounding a niche music maker, and Teenage Engineering's OP-1 might just be the most anticipated synthesizer in the history of mankind. We've already seen just what it's capable of, and now it's starring in its very own music video. Better still, it's inching ever closer to shipping, with a recent newsletter affirming that it's 90 percent complete with respect to functionality. We're also told that it'll ship with a half dozen synthesizer engines and two sampler types, and a beta test is said to be "approaching." The outfit has just received its "golden sample" for the keyboard module, and it's waiting for a few more component suppliers to come through before belting out a final ship date. But hey -- at least you know it'll run $799 / €799, eventually. LG Optimus One headed to T-Mobile with 3G hotspot and WiFi calls?

If the allegedly leaked slide immediately above is the real deal, it looks like the LG Optimus One is destined for T-Mobile, and it's going to get some serious use out of that 802.11 b/g WiFi radio. We knew the quad-band GSM handset was going to have a shot of Froyo on top of some fairly middling specs, but here's an unexpected treat: the Android handset just might be the first Android device with UMA support. If you've already forgotten what that particular acronym means, we don't blame you, as Unlicensed Mobile Access hasn't held the spotlight since the days of HotSpot@Home, but suffice it to say the tech uses a WiFi access point to make free VoIP calls, no cell signal (or minutes) required. It'd be easy to point to this move as a nefarious T-Mobile plot to free up cellular bandwidth a la the femtocell, except it apparently also works the other way, too -- the Optimus One will allegedly let you share that HSDPA 7.2 Mbps connection over WiFi with your thirsty laptop.LG Optimus One headed to T-Mobile with 3G hotspot and WiFi calls? originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 25 Sep 2010 23:51:00 EDT. Entelligence: Begun these tablet wars have

Entelligence is a column by technology strategist and author Michael Gartenberg, a man whose desire for a delicious cup of coffee and a quality New York bagel is dwarfed only by his passion for tech. In these articles, he'll explore where our industry is and where it's going -- on both micro and macro levels -- with the unique wit and insight only he can provide.

Apple may have validated the tablet market with the successful launch of the iPad, but the competition won't simply cede that space to Cupertino. From the Samsung Galaxy Tab and a host of other Android-based products, to HP's ethereal Slate and rumored WebOS tablet to a potential "BlackPad" from RIM, everyone wants a piece of the tablet market. The net result? We're going to see a whole host of devices starting in the fourth quarter of this year well into the first quarter of 2011, and based on what we've seen from various public leaks and vendor conversations, these products are going to be all over the place. Sadly, it appears many haven't learned the lessons why 'tweener devices failed in the past, and most of these devices will not do well in the market. Many of these efforts appear rushed to market before the holidays and few will be remembered by this time next year. It's one thing to clone a successful product but imperfect clones usually tend to work out for the worst.Continue reading Entelligence: Begun these tablet wars haveEntelligence: Begun these tablet wars have originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 26 Sep 2010 18:30:00 EDT. Co-creator of T9, Martin King, passes away

Some of today's young'uns starting out on QWERTY and full-touch devices might not even know what T9 is, but let us tell you something: back in the day, it was the way things got done on your phone. Copied by a number of manufacturers and software firms (notably Motorola with iTap), T9 was the premier product of start-up Tegic that would eventually find its way to a majority of phones with numeric keypads sold around the world -- several billion, in fact -- and continues to enjoy enormous success today. T9's co-inventor, Martin King, passed away this week after a protracted bout with cancer; though he hadn't been actively involved with Tegic (now a part of Nuance) in some time, he had been engaged with a newer startup, Exbiblio, whose technology actively parses words snapped by cameraphones and directs the user to more information in real time. We'll pull out our old Sony Ericsson T68 in your honor, Martin.Co-creator of T9, Martin King, passes away originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 25 Sep 2010 19:36:00 EDT. DLS Review: Dropbox for Android, now you have access to your cloud storage wherever you go

Note: Dropbox for BlackBerry was released today -- and an updated version for iOS was also released. This is a review for the Android version, but I believe all three are functionally very similar.

Using Dropbox on a mobile device is an odd amalgam of emerging technologies. On the one hand you have the cloud --and everyone loves the flexibility that the cloud brings -- but on the other, when you're on the move, head hunkered over your smartphone, do you really need access to anything other than documents?

Having said that, there are certainly unconventional uses for Dropbox on your smartphone. You can stream music and video straight from your Dropbox, for example -- but why not just load up your phone before you leave? Streaming high-quality content over public Wi-Fi or costly 3G isn't the best idea in the world.

Still, despite an inherent lack of real-world usefulness, Dropbox for Android definitely works, and it works well. You can upload photos, videos, music and text files directly from your phone, and immediately share them with the db.tt URL shortener.
Dropbox for Android is so tidy and full-featured, that it's best if I start with a big over-arching statement that sets the tone: Dropbox for Android does everything a Dropbox user could want. Now I will work backwards and explain the few things that are missing, or that don't quite work as they should.

First of all, you can't move files from your main folder into the Public folder. You'd think that it would just be a matter of selecting 'Move to...' from the context menu, but no cigar.

Then, for some odd reason, you can't view the basic 'Getting Started' or 'How to use the Public folder' RTF files. It says the 'ROM file type not supported' -- why...?

Uploading files direct from your phone seems to work for new text files, and videos shot with your camera -- but not photos. Instead, you get a rather unhelpful '0 of 1 files uploaded successfully' error message.

Other than that, the app works fantastically. You can share short URLs to files in your Dropbox, and you can also upload files to Dropbox using Android's contextual 'Share' option. You can upload music straight from your media player, for example. You can't upload Gmail email attachments directly, however -- you have to save them first.

All in all, if you have a valid reason for accessing your Dropbox on the move, this Android app (and its BlackBerry and iOS brethren) could be very handy indeed.

Dropbox for Android Tech Specs

Installed Size -- 2.12MB, but it caches some files (images? text files?)
Speed/Responsiveness -- Excellent, no slow-down registered (Android 1.6 @ 600MHz, LG GT540 Swift)
User Interface -- Very minimal, but full-featured (except for not being able to move files!) Also has a 'search' function; neat
Configurability & Extensibility -- Very few settings can be changed, but then again, Dropbox isn't a very configurable service...
License -- Free, closed-source

Google Docs gets six new fonts, including Calibri, courtesy of Google Font API

Filed under: Text, Google, web 2.0It's about time! You can now choose from almost twice as many fonts when editing a Google Docs document. Calibri, Cambria, Droid Serif, Droid Sans, Corsiva and Consolas are now available. Such magic is brought to us via the Google Font API.

An Illustrated Slice Of TC Disrupt Hackathon Life

Pizza has just arrived for the second time (!) here at the TC Disrupt Hackathon at the San Francisco Design Center Concourse and it's finally cooled down after weathering one of the hottest days we've experienced in San Francisco in awhile.

I've been here for about seven hours and met some great and incredibly nerdy folks. Some of us are working hard, some of us are hardly working and some of us are already asleep at 8:00 PM PST.

This is why you should use Internet Explorer 9

Filed under: Microsoft, BrowsersIt's a little bit ironic: I was in San Francisco for the launch of IE9, yet I still haven't written anything about it. A lot has already been covered by Lee, but there are still a few hidden gems and neat details that you might not know about. In an effort to continue our exhaustive and unrivalled coverage of Web browsers, I'm going to give you my take on Microsoft's new, prospective champion.

It's hard to describe just what makes Internet Explorer 9 such joy to use. It would be easy to say 'it just works,' but that would be a cop-out. IE9 is like a simple, beautifully elegant dress -- sleek lines, no frills, but masterfully designed with a singular purpose in mind: Web browsing.
The first thing that strikes you with IE9 -- except the fact that it requires a frickin' reboot to install -- is just how smooth your interaction with the browser, and thus the Web, is. The UI has been designed by a genius, and the way tabs and windows whoosh around is reminiscent of Firefox's Panorama. There's definitely been a move towards more tactile interfaces in recent years, and it leaves Chrome feeling positively clunky in comparison.

There are little things, like the perfection of the address bar (the 'One Box'): notice how it 'greys out' when your mouse isn't near it; how the stop and refresh buttons are also there (and movable, if you prefer them on the left); how you can turn search-as-you-type on and off. It's so perfect, and such a glorious amalgam of Firefox and Chrome, that it hurts.

Moving on (I've calmed down now), the unified tab-and-address bar area, which has received a lot of flak for being too small for power-users, is resizable! You can simply make the address bar narrower, leaving more space for tabs. More space is also dedicated to tabs on wider displays: screen widths over 1280 pixels (i.e., every power-user) have two thirds of that space reserved for tabs -- it's only on smaller screens that the address bar occupies half the width (and it's still resizable!).

Putting the One Box (Omnibox, eat your heart out) on the same line as the tabs also puts IE9 into first place as far as vertical space is concerned. It's about 20 pixels more compact than Chrome, but almost half the size of Firefox 4's bulky address-and-tabs-and-huge-orange-button setup.

Then there's the Windows 7 taskbar, or 'Superbar,' integration. When I first saw it in action during the keynote speech, I was dubious, but I needn't have worried; it's awesome. You almost don't need tabs -- simply pin your top five most-visited sites and use the Superbar instead! If you haven't seen it in action yet, visit Twitter (in IE9 of course) and drag the tab down to the Superbar. Open another tab -- your 'mentions' pane, for example. Now hover over the Twitter icon on the Superbar; you have quick access to every open tab!

The pinned app icon also has a jumplist that can be added with a few META tags in a site's HTML. Right click your Twitter icon and you can jump straight to 'New Tweet.' A site can also notify you of changes to a page through the Superbar -- if you pin Facebook to your superbar, you'll see a red star appear when there's activity on your news stream.

IE9 blurs the difference between the Web and your operating system -- and that's intentional. The average user now spends so much time surfing the Web that the underlying operating system, and downloaded, locally-run apps, have become all but redundant. Remember, too, that Google is working on a browser that is an operating system.

After talking to Microsoft, Google, and Mozilla in San Francisco and Mountain View, I'm sure that this is just the opening salvo in the browser-as-a-platform crusade. All three major browsers have now assembled their forces -- HTML5, standards compliance, fast JavaScript execution, and hardware accelerated rendering -- and it makes me wonder whether Windows 7 might be the last local software-oriented operating system that we'll see. It certainly makes sense for Google to push Chrome OS -- they have nothing to lose! -- but it leaves a huge question mark hanging ominously over the fate of Windows 8.

We're now moving at such a speed that in the next couple of years, Web apps will become so tightly integrated to the parent OS that they will simply become apps. You'll be able to write one app in JavaScript and CSS that looks the same across every browser -- and thus every platform: mobile, desktop, and television. Both end-users and developers should be salivating.

Sonos Wireless Dock hands-on

What you have pictured here is the latest Sonos music device. In person the Sonos Wireless Dock is exactly what you were thinking when you read the press release yesterday. The demo unit had a special Sonos branded half case that left the bottom unaltered, because like many other docks, the cases get in the way of proper docking. The dock does accept the standard iPod dock inserts, so maybe there's still hope that a case manufacturer will ship it with a special insert made with the intent to simplify the life of one who like to use both an iPod case, and a dock together.

Khosla Completes The VC Triumvirate At Disrupt

In venture capital, there are three people who rule Silicon Valley: John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins, Michael Moritz of Sequoia Capital, and Vinod Khosla of Khosla Ventures. All three will be speaking at Disrupt. (There are still a few tickets left). We've already mentioned Doerr and Moritz, and now we are pleased to announce that Khosla will be completing the triumvirate.

Khosla, of course, was the first CEO of Sun Microsystems back in the 1980s before he joined John Doerr to embark on a storied career as a venture capitalist at Kleiner Perkins. At Kleiner, he had a string of huge wins, including Nexgen (which was acquired by AMD and formed the core of its ability to take on Intel), Juniper Networks, and Cerent (which was sold to Cisco for $7 billion). In 2004, he created Khosla Ventures to invest his own money and began to dive deep into greentech, while still keeping his hand in infotech. Always known for being a risk junkie and identifying big opportunities early, he started to build one of the deepest portfolios of greentech investments in the Valley. Last year, he finally took outside money, raising $1.1 billion for two new funds, including a seed fund.

Ford's Mulally: "We cannot make a business case" for composites

There's been plenty of talk about carmakers moving to lighter materials like carbon fiber to reduce weight, improve fuel economy and enhance the driving experience. Two years ago, Honda and Nissan formed a consortium to research the mass-market implementation of carbon fiber. Last year, BMW launched its own joint venture to do the same. Lamborghini joined the party when it opened its own CF research center earlier this year. In practice, though, use of composites for large panels is still limited to spendier offerings like the BMW M3, Audi R8 V10 Spyder and the exotic classes.

Ford CEO Alan Mulally gives a reason for that. "We cannot make a business case for composites in the auto industry," he says, citing the work left to be done on producing better steel and alloys. Mulally adds that getting enough composites to meet a volume maker's needs and the sheer cost of production nixes the prospect for now. Instead, thermosetting plastics - different than thermoplastics - are a solution more near-at-hand.

Windows Phone 7 has tethering support, up to carriers whether to enable it

Sound familiar? For Windows Phone 7, seems like Microsoft's taking an angle shared by both Apple and Google on a feature that enjoys a tenuous relationship at best with network operators, saying that data tethering will be available but it'll be up to carriers to decide whether to offer it. Though feature removal rarely goes over well with potential buyers of Windows Phone 7 devices, it's actually a pretty easy call from Microsoft's perspective: the company needs as much carrier support as it can get right now to ramp up a fresh mobile platform going against entrenched giants with several years' head start, and enforcing the availability of a feature that tends to choke 3G networks probably wouldn't be a great way to get that. Needless to say, we've little doubt that the dev community will find a way around any roadblocks in short order -- but officially, anyhow, the ball is in the operators' courts.Windows Phone 7 has tethering support, up to carriers whether to enable it originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 17:42:00 EDT. Mozilla's Seabird phone concept teaches us how to dream

Look up, peasant, from your soot-stained hands. Drop that shovel into the furrowed ground and gaze upon the magic* that Mozilla has wrought. Concept designer Billy May, working through Mozilla's "Open Web Concept Phone" project, has gathered community feedback and followed up on some rather mundane visions for the mobile future with this little beauty, the Mozilla Seabird. The completely fictional device has a disturbing initial resemblance to a BlackBerry Storm, but as the video unfolds the functionality is really what sells this thing. The big innovation is the use of dual pico projectors on the side of the handset, which can provide different functionality based on the phone's orientation: flat on a table they pump out the two halves of a QWERTY keyboard, up on a dock they offer the dual purpose of a large viewing screen above and a seamless projected keyboard below. Other features, like the pop-out wireless pointer / Bluetooth headset are slightly less realistic but no less charming. Now, before you get too excited, you should know that Mozilla has no plans to build this or any phone, they're just messing around with some fancy 3D software and the bright imagination of their community of users. Still, for the two minutes and thirty seven seconds that the video after the break unfolds, allow yourself to think: "What if?"

*Actually, it's just a 3D render.Continue reading Mozilla's Seabird phone concept teaches us how to dreamMozilla's Seabird phone concept teaches us how to dream originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 19:01:00 EDT. YouTube begins trial of live streaming platform, crowd goes wild

Filed under: Internet, Video, GoogleFrom the oh dear Lord, it's about time department: YouTube, over the next two days, is conducting a trial of its new live streaming platform.

This first test will see live content streamed by four of its partners: Howcast, Next New Networks (Barely Political), Rocketboom and Young Hollywood. Admittedly I haven't heard of any of them -- and I'm more interested in watching the season finale of True Blood -- but looking at their channel pages, they all seem to be popular.

The test will run for two days, after which live streaming will presumably be rolled out to the unwashed masses. While I'm sure there'll be tons of user-generated content, I'm more interested in whether YouTube can strike up broadcast deals with real broadcasters. TV shows, live music, news... this could be massive.

The live broadcast schedule for today is below -- see if anything catches your eye!

Porsche offering modern nav system to replace classic radios

Filed under: Classics, Coupe, Performance, Etc., Technology, Porsche, Design/Style

What if you could update your classic car with modern tech, without losing the style that you've come to love? Porsche now has a solution for owners of old 911s. Starting in October 2010, owners will be able to retrofit their cars with the Porsche Classic Radio Navigation System (Part # 911 645 910 00), which packages a display screen fitted into a form factor that is an exact fit for the original factory radio's location. Round knobs keep appearances in line with that classic Porsche aesthetic, but the technology is purely 21st century.

The unit will retail for €595,00 plus VAT (around $776 USD before taxes at current exchange rates). Considering what Porsche gets for some of the options on its modern cars, the neo-retro nav unit's price seems pretty good. We understand a desire for modern conveniences in older cars, and the Porsche Classic Radio Navigation System may be an answer to the prayers of some 911 enthusiasts since it obviates the need for a less desirable aftermarket solution. (Of cource, one could always just stick a portable GPS unit on the windshield...)

According to MotoBullet, the Classic Radio Navigation System is designed to fit Porsche 911s from from model years 1963 to 1977 (it might also fit the Porsche 914). They go on to suggest that this nav unit may also work with firstgeneration Porsche 912s, but those guys are already going too slow to care where they're heading. (We kid, we kid... out of jealousy.)

Votizen Raises $1.5 Million To Make Sure Government Representatives Hear Your Voice

It's easy to forget, but every American citizen has a team of representatives ?from their citycouncilup through the Senate ? that's supposed to be working in their interest. We're their constituents, and while they won't always do what we ask them to (after all, there are a lot of people asking them for different things), they're at least supposed to hear us out. Votizen is a new startup that's looking to make this somewhat idealized notion a reality, and today it's announcing that it's landed $1.5 million in funding in a round led by Founders Fund, with participating investors including 500 Startups, 15 Angels (Bessemer), Keith Rabois, Ron Conway, Mark Goines, Founder Collective, Felicis Ventures, PivotNorth, Steve Blank, Eric Ries, Shervin Pishevar, and Tom Shields.

Votizen cofounder David Binetti says that representatives are often overwhelmed with the number of inbound messages they receive, especially as political activists use astroturfing strategies to mimic grassroots campaigns ? and the problem is only getting worse.

10-inch Galaxy Tab promised for 2011 by Samsung Ireland General Manager

Tucked away at the bottom of a news story about who'll be carrying the 7-inch Galaxy Tab in Ireland this year is the promise of a 10-inch Tab (presumably for the whole world) next year. This comes straight from local General Manager Gary Twohig, who seems to have casually disclosed his company's plans for a 10-inch Android slate in the first half of 2011. Beyond that, all we know is that it'll include the V8 JavaScript Engine that first showed up as a touted feature in Froyo, though if we had to bet our Led Zep record collection, we'd probably say this 10-incher will be holding out for Android 3.x -- either Gingerbread or Honeycomb -- for an experience better optimized to run on larger screens. In fact, that may be the likeliest reason why this new tablet didn't debut with its 7-inch sibling: waiting on a better OS.

Well, it looks users of the latest Kindle have more than just an official software update at their disposal these days -- the device has also now been jailbroken. That will let you take advantage of the various hacks that have been available for the previous generation Kindle, including USB networking, additional font options, and some exciting screensavers. Of course, like all jailbreaks, you should proceed at your own risk -- hit up the source link below for the necessary details if you're ready.

My Netgear Router Came Swathed In Dishonesty

So I had to go pick up a new wireless router yesterday, and picked up a plain $35 Netgear one. Checking the back, I noticed this amazing, amazing panel, full of the most misleading garbage I've seen in a long time. Netgear should be ashamed of themselves. Let's just take a look at what's wrong with this panel.

Dell working on 7-inch tablet, Streak to be sold at Best Buy soon

Dell had moderate success with its Dell Steak (pictured above), and looks to be following upon that with a new tablet. CEO Michael Dell announced the device during a conference in San Francisco, but did not give any details other than it would pack a 7-inch screen and run an unspecified version of Android. Considering the screen size, it is probably safe to assume the device will be a full-fledged tablet, and not a phone/tablet hybrid like the Streak. One would hope that Gingerbread would be released and on the tablet by the time the device is launched, but that might be a pipe dream considering the struggles Dell has had just getting the Streak up to Froyo. In addition, the CEO mentioned that the Streak would be available in Best Buy retail locations soon. Electronic Arts Gives Unity?s Game Development Platform A Big Wet Kiss

If you're a startup that's building a game development platform, you can't get a much bigger endorsement than the one Unity is getting today from Electronic Arts, the multi-billion dollar developer of the Madden series, Harry Potter games, and more. Today, the companies are announcing that EA has signed a multi-year enterprise deal with Unity: EA will be using Unity's platform across multiple franchises, and all of EA's developers will have access to the "entire range of Unity products from web and mobile to consoles and beyond". The timing is also good: Unity is launching its 3.0 upgrade next week.

The EA partnership for Unity is big in and of itself, but check out this quote from EA VP Chief Creative Director Richard Hilleman:

Adobe Illustrator HTML5 add-on pack released, lets you export CSS3, SVG and HTML directly

A new beta 'Labs' add-on from Adobe adds a ton of HTML5-specific features to Adobe Illustrator CS5. This follows the release of an HTML5 add-on for Dreamweaver CS5 that shipped at the end of August.

This add-on actually allows users of Illustrator to export their designs directly into HTML5 code. Instead of shipping off finished designs to be re-rendered in HTML and CSS by a Web designer, Illustrator can now export images as a combination of SVG and CSS3. The exported Web resource, according to Adobe, will be compatible with Chrome, Firefox, Safari and hopefully IE9.

Technologizer, presumably extrapolating from the add-on's download page, says that the HTML5 code produced by Illustrator will work seamlessly across the platforms; on PCs, tablets and smartphones. I guess that has something to do with the infinite scalability of vector graphics, but as I don't have a copy of Illustrator I can't confirm it.

This marks a major deviation for Illustrator, and it definitely shows that Adobe, despite its huge investment in Flash, is trying its best to stay contemporary -- or at the very least, ensuring the customers of its Creative Studio cash cow stay happy.Adobe Illustrator HTML5 add-on pack released, lets you export CSS3, SVG and HTML directly originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 13 Sep 2010 07:15:00 EST. Google Busts Out The Ultimate Spam Fighting Tool: The Lawsuit

As an Internet behemoth with properties that get visited a zillion times a day, life battling spammers must be pretty tough for Google. Sure, they invent new technologies to try and stop these jokers. But like parasites, they quickly adapt and come up with new methods to manipulate the system. And when it gets bad enough, it's now clear that Google is willing to throw technology out the window and simply sue the bastards.

As they've announced on the Google Blog today, the search giant is taking a group of rogue pharmacies to court in order to stop them fromcontinuallybombarding Google's ad ecosystem with their spam. As Google notes, in this case, it's not just that the spammers are annoying users, they're potentially tricking people and offering products that "can be dangerous without the right prescription." So Google felt as if they had to act.

Chevy gets cracking on Cruze EV fleet testing

Filed under: Concept Cars, Sedan, Technology, Chevrolet, Electric, South Korea, Daewoo
Chevrolet Cruze EV - Click above for high-res image gallery

The Chevrolet Volt hasn't yet gone on sale, but General Motors is looking at ways of expanding its electric vehicle lineup. Chevy, along with partner LG, is employing a group of all-electric cars in the form of the Cruze. The sedans are part of a demonstration fleet which is located in Seoul, South Korea and is being used to provide data in an electric vehicle research project. The goal is to gather information on driving patterns and charging behavior in addition to consumer acceptance.

The Cruze EVs, along with some Daewoo Lacetti Premieres EVs, are the first fleet of full-size electric vehicles and should provide invaluable information for The General. Staying full-size means not sacrificing cargo space, so the battery pack is mounted to the underbody, leaving the trunk area open for plenty recyclable, canvas grocery bags.

The current range of the Cruze EV is around 100 miles and the car is capable of a 0-60 run in 8.2 seconds. The Cruze EV can hit a top speed of 102.5 miles per hour. Currently, the Cruze EV can be recharged via a standard 220-volt outlet in 8 to 10 hours, however the researchers are testing "quick charge" methods to reduce that figure.

The program, which begins at the end of October, is currently a demonstration and research project for South Korea only. There have been no announcements made discussing the Cruze EV coming stateside.

Dick Costolo?s Latest Career Move: Male Model

Dick Costolo has a pretty sweet life. He sold his previous company, FeedBurner, to Google. He?s now the COO at Twitter--undeniably one of the hottest Web companies in the world. And for a guy that?s had so much success he has almost no enemies. There?s not even a snarky, fictional movie in the works about him. Given all this I feel less-bad about what I?m about to do: Mock his new career as a male-model.
Apparently, Costolo, who relocated to the Bay Area for the job at Twitter, was so thrilled with the work of his realtors that he agreed to be in a local print ad for them with a testimonial quote that....well...if you can figure out what it means you?re ahead of me. In case you can't read it below it says, "Extraordinary is taking a simple idea and revolutionizing it in a way that changes the world." From what I hear, the ad has become a source of good-natured-teasing hilarity around the Twitter offices, and Costolo--not a stranger to teasing his friends-- has been a good sport about it. So far.

HTC director confirms Windows Phone 7 phones launching next month

It's unclear whether the dude was speaking out of turn, but an HTC regional director responsible for North Africa and the Middle East has gone on record with gulfnews saying on no uncertain terms that the company "will be launching Windows Phone 7 handsets next month." Of course, that lines up nicely with just about everything we've been hearing lately -- not to mention the torrent of HTC-specific leaks we've seen -- and if true, it gives Microsoft a pretty generous buffer ahead of its holiday 2010 guidance for the platform's commercial release. He goes on to say that HTC will be releasing "around five more models by end of the year," though it's not clear how that mix will fall between Android, Windows Phone 7, and possibly even Brew MP; the Desire HD and Desire Z seem like a nice way to close out the year on the Android side of things if you ask us, which leaves plenty of room for awesome WinPho hardware. Blue announces Mikey for Flip condenser mic

Get ready for a wave of Designed for Flip accessories that take advantage of Flip Ultra HD's new FlipPort expansion port, people. First out of the gate is the Blue Mikey, which we'd heard about from Cisco already -- it's a condenser mic that plugs into the bottom of the Ultra and provides better audio, with automatic sensitivity, a mic-in jack, and a tripod mount. It's powered by an AAA battery, which is sort of lame -- we'd love to see something like this with a battery built-in that can charge the camera as well. Oh well, we can dream. The Mikey will run $69, but we don't know when it'll hit apart from a "debut" at CES 2011, which could mean almost anytime in the next year. PR after the break.Continue reading Blue announces Mikey for Flip condenser micBlue announces Mikey for Flip condenser mic originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 20 Sep 2010 21:59:00 EDT. Belgian VC Firm Puts 4.9 Million Euros into Vente-Prive Wannabe

After investing some 15 million euros in France-based OneDirect a few weeks ago, Belgian VC fund Gimv has just announced that it is dropping 4.9 million euros on a Vente-Prive competitor called Private Outlet. This investments brings the company's second round of funding to 9 million euros and should add a bit of monetary fuel to its international development.

Today, the company which refers to itself as Europe's "private online shopping club" counts some 1.8 million members in 5 countries, including France, the UK, Spain, Italy and Germany. Like a majority of the other private sale sites out there, Private Outlet offers up to 70% discounts on fashion accessories and clothing from roughly 150 luxury brands (Christian Dior, D&G, Chanel, etc.).

Distilled From Burbn, Instagram Makes Quick Beautiful Photos Social (Preview)

For about the past six months or so, I've been using an app called Burbn. Despite being in stealth mode, the app attracted quite a bit of buzz as it was in the location space and built entirely in HTML5. Oh, and the$500,000 investment from Baseline Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz helped gather interest as well. But it turns out Burbn was a red herring of sorts. Or perhaps more appropriately, it was a testing ground. The product that emerged is much better: Instagram.

Unlike Burbn, Instagram is neither a location-based app (though that is one component), nor is it HTML5-based. But it did spring out of the way co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger saw people using Burbn. That is: quick, social sharing -- and a desire to share photos from places. That's the foundation of Instagram.

Ubuntu prototype uses face recognition to intelligently move UI elements (video)

(function() { var s = document.createElement('SCRIPT'), s1 = document.getElementsByTagName('SCRIPT')[0]; s.type = 'text/javascript'; s.async = true; s.src = 'http://widgets.digg.com/buttons.js'; s1.parentNode.insertBefore(s, s1); })(); Digg
Not that we haven't seen mock-ups before for systems using webcams to intelligently move user interface elements, but it's another thing entirely for a company to make a public proclamation that it's tinkering with implementing something of the sort into a future build of its OS. Over at the Canonical design blog, one Christian Giordano has revealed that the company is in the early stages of creating new ways to interact with Ubuntu, primarily by using proximity and orientation sensors in order to have one's PC react based on how they're sitting, where they're sitting and where their eyes / head are at. For instance -- once a user fires up a video and leans back, said video would automatically go into fullscreen mode. Similarly, if a user walked away to grab some coffee and a notification appeared, that notification would be displayed at fullscreen so that he / she could read it from faraway. There's no mention just yet on when the company plans to actually bring these ideas to end-users, but the video embedded after the break makes us long for "sooner" rather than "later."Continue reading Ubuntu prototype uses face recognition to intelligently move UI elements (video)Ubuntu prototype uses face recognition to intelligently move UI elements (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 20 Sep 2010 12:54:00 EDT.
